Property Insurance Coverage

Georgia Tech provides property insurance to protect Institute-owned property and certain specialized property from covered losses. Coverage requirements vary depending on the type of property and how it is used or transported.

Coverage Types

All Risk Property Insurance

All Risk Property Insurance provides coverage for specialized property that is not insured under the Building and Contents Insurance program.

Covered property may include:

  • Fine art
  • Mobile equipment
  • Watercraft
  • Leased equipment
  • Property in transit
  • Property on loan to Georgia Tech for official business

Deductible: $500

Building and Contents Insurance

Building and Contents Insurance protects Georgia Tech-owned buildings and personal property against direct physical loss or damage.

Covered causes of loss include:

  • Fire
  • Lightning
  • Explosion
  • Windstorm
  • Water damage
  • Vandalism
  • Flood
  • Burglary

Losses are reimbursed based on the documented cost to repair or replace the building or contents with materials of like kind and quality.

Deductible

  • $1,000 per claim
  • Laptop computers: $1,000 per unit when the cause of loss is burglary

Important: Burglary claims require evidence of forcible entry or a breached security device.

Trip Transit Insurance

Trip Transit Insurance provides coverage for Georgia Tech-owned property while it is being transported by a commercial carrier.

Coverage applies to:

  • Georgia Tech-owned equipment
  • Equipment on loan to Georgia Tech
  • Equipment shipped for repair
  • Leased or rented equipment being returned to the owner

Deductible: $5,000 per item shipped

Coverage

  • Deductible: $10,000 per shipment
  • Maximum liability: $600,000 per shipment

Reporting Property Damage or Loss

If Institute property is lost, damaged, or stolen:

  • Report theft immediately to the Georgia Tech Police Department.
  • Notify Insurance & Claims Management within 24 hours.
  • Submit estimates for damaged property when available.
  • Provide supporting documentation, including photos, receipts, and serial numbers, if applicable.

The State Self-Insurance Program determines whether a claim is covered.
Any insurance recovery received will be credited back to the department through a journal entry.
